UPDATE: You have done it!! Between community arts grants and your support, we have successfully funded the project. Thank YOU so much for making this possible!!
It’s hard to believe, but it’s been 5 years since we moved into our home at 620 S Walnut St.
To celebrate, let’s not just acknowledge the day, but send a message to our community!! …that Love is stronger than hate… that Dignity is greater than discrimination.
Let’s offer a lasting marker to the community of the values you have supported not just these past 5 years but the more than 15 years since Shalom first opened in a small room at the First United Methodist Church.
I need your help.
Since I came on board as the Executive Director, I’ve seen and heard things I never expected – a level of hatred and prejudice directed at people in poverty that I had no idea existed. It was shocking and wounding to me to witness it… and I can’t even imagine how horrible it must be for those who have to live with it everyday.
Bloomington is better than this. We can do better. We must do better.
That’s why I’m asking you to celebrate our 5th anniversary in the building by donating to the More Than Homeless Public Art Project (click here to do so).
The More Than Homeless Public Art Project is a permanent message to the community that love matters, that people need to be accepted for who they are, flaws and all, that we’re all in this together. Displayed out front of our Center, it will be a reminder to the thousands who pass our Center every day that the greatest beauty of all is compassion.
Some have asked, “Why public art?” Wouldn’t it be better to give to something else? Food or shelter? Yes, absolutely give to those things, but let’s also remember as a wise man once shared with us, “Man does not live by bread alone.”
Shalom is a place of support, care, service, and solutions… and also ADVOCACY. We stand for the rights of the homeless, the marginalized, the disabled, the downtrodden, the destitute. We stand for the transcendence of prejudice. And your support over so many years let’s me know that you do, too.
So, I ask again – please support this powerful project, which sends a message to our entire community that Love Wins.
My favorite part of the new art piece (details of which you can see here) is the central heart. It’s a 4 foot mosaic covered in countless cuts of mirror. As you look into the heart, you see yourself in a thousand pieces – broken yet held, incomplete yet whole, imperfect yet loved.
Is that not a message for all of us? Is that not something the world needs? Unless you and I jump in to make it happen, it will be a message that no one ever sees. Please donate. Please support this great project.
People need you. They need to know you care.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Rev. Forrest Gilmore, Executive Director
