A Place to Call Home

The tale of Rob Deckard and Amy Boyce is not what most people would consider a typical love story.

Rob and Amy met on the streets. Both of them were homeless with no place to go. As fate would have it, they met each other one night at a local shelter. Soon, the two fell madly in love.

The pair had both made mistakes in their lives, but together they wanted to turn things around. Amy, who suffers from seizures and bipolar disorder, tried adamantly to get her disability benefits restored. Rob searched unrelentingly for work. However, they still needed help to get them through life’s daily struggles—they needed Shalom.

Amy remembers, “If Shalom wasn’t here, we probably would have starved. We wouldn’t have been able to get access to the resources you provide.” Amy is referring to daily meals, showers, laundry, and mailing address services offered by Shalom.

Additionally, our legal clinic and regular visits from Social Security agents helped Amy finally restore her disability benefits. Through our employment initiative with JobLinks, Rob was able to find a job. And consequently, they were able to move into their own place and finally create a home together.

“Shalom rocks! Shalom rules! You guys are good for the people, I’m telling you. Good for society, not only for the homeless, but for everybody,” Rob proclaims.

Amy chimes in, “[Our lives] are 150% better than what they were. We’ve got a roof over our heads.”

Not just a roof, a place to call their own—a home.
